Last week I shared some of the skills new managers need to build and lead strong teams. Those included excellent communication, empathy, modeling the way, delegating, and defining clear goals. This week I want to build on those with some additional, necessary skills. Interestingly, they are probably more of the same skills your leader used to help nurture you into your current role.
The first is recognition and appreciation. Highlighting your team’s efforts and accomplishments is essential for morale and motivation. Always make an effort to acknowledge and celebrate achievements, both big and small. Simple gestures of appreciation can go a long way in building a positive team culture.
That doesn’t mean that strong teams are always firing smoothly on all cylinders. There will always be areas needing improvement. Regular feedback, highlighting areas needing development is essential for team growth. Provide constructive feedback to team members, helping them identify areas for improvement while supporting their professional growth and advancement.
Leaders of strong teams endeavor to build a positive team dynamic from within. Engaging in team-building activities can help strengthen bonds and improve teamwork. Be creative in planning activities that encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and trust-building among team members.
While conflict is inevitable in any team, the most effective leaders address issues promptly and constructively. Don’t run away from or ignore them hoping they’ll go away. Encourage open discussions, actively listen to all parties involved, and work towards finding mutually acceptable solutions.
Finally, be adaptable. Adaptability is essential in a world of continuous change. Be open to new ideas and willing to adapt your team’s strategies when necessary. Flexibility and agility are valuable qualities for both managers and their teams.
By honing these essential skills, you will begin to create a dynamic and motivated team that can achieve remarkable results. Building a strong team is an ongoing process that requires effort and continuous dedication.
