You’ve no doubt heard the saying, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” Although a bit cliché, it is undoubtedly true. You never succeed alone. There is always someone supporting you.

Precious little in this world is achieved through solo efforts. Athletes in individual sports such as golf, boxing, swimming, and track all have a team of trainers, coaches, doctors, and physical therapists helping them. That doesn’t even take into account the team that designed and built the equipment they use.

Let’s take swimming as the example here. Unless you are on a relay team, swimming is a very individual sport—one swimmer in their own lane pushing for everything they’re worth. And yet, no one on the team achieves anything on their own. There are team coaches and assistant coaches. At the highest levels, there are individual coaches for each athlete. There are a couple of team captains and seasoned swimmers mentoring the newbies. Not to mention that each swimmer’s individual placement and times combine with the overall team score during a swim meet. So even in a very individual sport, there is always someone one (multiple someones) supporting you.

It is exactly the same in the working world. A great leader is important. A great support staff can make or break an organization. If the team feels like they are all important, valued, contributing and are being recognized for that contribution, everyone succeeds.
