“Being a strong leader doesn’t mean you never ask for help. Only a bloated ego believes they never need help. Ask for help so you can grow and be a better leader for your team.” – The Colonel
I just returned from a weekend summit of Certified Speaking Professionals and Hall of Fame Speakers. This is my opportunity each year to ask for help from the best of the best in my industry. We share ideas with each other and help each other become better. It is the most valuable investment I make into my business every year.
You, no doubt, have areas of expertise that have gotten you to where you are now in your career. It’s important to know and acknowledge that. But that doesn’t mean you know everything. It doesn’t mean you get to stop learning and growing. The Colonel used to say, “Being a strong leader doesn’t mean you never ask for help. Only a bloated ego believes they never need help. Ask for help so you can grow and be a better leader for your team.” Dad had advanced degrees in three separate engineering disciplines and mentored hundreds of people in his life, but when it came time to do something he wasn’t an expert in, he was not afraid to ask for help and tap into someone else’s expertise. Even the wisest of mentors have mentors. And significant leaders are never afraid to ask for help when they need to.
As a leader, it’s imperative that you seek out help, input, and wisdom from others when you need it. Doing so will make you a better leader and will, by your example, empower your team to ask for help when they need it.
